Walnut Dining Bench Upholstered with Linen Blend Fabric

This project was all about restraint - a light, elegant dining bench with just enough comfort to work both as a seat or a quiet spot to stretch out on.

The brief came from a client who wanted the piece to feel minimal with a super light design, while tying in with the darker walnut tones of his kitchen. The result is this long, tailored dining bench: a slim, uninterrupted length.

The piece was hand-made from 3mm walnut veneers, laminated onto birch ply, with a solid walnut lipping to finish the edge. It’s one continuous length from end to end — no joins — which keeps the look clean but also meant we had to think carefully about strength. To make sure it wouldn’t sag over time, we embedded metal reinforcing channels into the ply, hidden from view but taking the weight.

The legs were a small challenge of their own. They needed to be neat, but strong — and we didn’t want any visible fixings. They were machined from a 6-axis CNC machine, which let us hide a threaded bar inside each one, as well as discreet levelling feet to deal with any slight unevenness in the floor.

The fabric was chosen by the interior designer — a rich green linen blend from Harlequin — upholstered by Emily Farncombe. It adds just the right touch of softness and colour.

The finished dining bench is quiet and confident — the kind of piece that looks like it’s always belonged there.
